Nokia has started putting more effort into improving its lagging share of the North American cell phone market.

Motorola has all but conquered North America in the past couple of years, with wildly popular handsets like the RAZR, but Nokia is intent on gaining back some lost ground.

The world’s biggest handset maker hopes that it will be able to crack the highly competitive market in Canada and the US by designing more advanced handsets for the many high-end North American customers. Nokia also hopes to improve its position with CDMA-based phones, through a joint venture with Sanyo Electric.
