Orange and Nortel Test HSDPA Wireless Network in France
2:04 am on March 16, 2006 | Category: Mobile Devices, Wireless Technology
Orange France is conducting a test of its high-speed HSDPA wireless technology, in preparation for the commercial launch of the company’s 3G service.
150 businesses in the French city of Lyon are participating in the trial, and are receiving access to live mobile TV, high-definition video on demand, streaming MP3s, and video gaming. Nortel is the official supplier of equipment for constructing the new 3G network.
This latest trial follows previous testing that was conducted in January through a partnership with Qualcomm, and involved completing UMTS and HSDPA calls over the 900MHz wireless band. As a result of the findings, Nortel suggested the 900MHz band for delivering advanced mobile services to users in more sparsely areas of France, where using HSDPA technology wouldn’t be cost effective.
