RIM and NTP Settle BlackBerry Patent Lawsuit
3:38 pm on March 3, 2006 | Category: Business, Mobile Devices, Law
Research in Motion has finally come to a final settlement with NTP, agreeing to pay the patent holding company $612.5 million.
This agreement was reached under extreme pressure, as the judge in the patent infringement case threatened to shut down BlackBerry service in the US, RIM’s biggest market. The settlement between the two companies, however, has resulted in a court order dismissing the case, and all possibility of an injunction against the wildly popular BlackBerry device.
This came as a great relief for investors, with RIM shares jumping over 14% immediately after the settlement was announced.
Although costly, the settlement is a guarantee that the company can finally get back down to business, and put an end to the many extra costs and uncertainties that have come as a result of this high profile court case.
