South American media group, Abril S.A., has received permission from Samsung Electronics to jointly conduct pilot tests of Samsung’s mobile WiMAX technology in Brazil.

The agreement will allow Abril’s cable television subsidiary to begin testing the Korean technology, known as WiBro, beginning in May. This paves the way for a commercial WiBro service to be launched in Brazil as soon as November.

Brazil is the second Latin American country to play host to testing of Samsung’s mobile WiMAX standard. Venezuelan mobile carrier, Omnivision C.A. signed a deal to conduct testing last December, and is set to begin commercial deployment of the technology in the third quarter of 2006.

Samsung has also agreed to back commercial launches of its mobile WiMAX standard in Japan, Italy, Croatia, and the United States. A WiBro service is already being rolled out in South Korea, and will be fully available by June.
