Softbank’s recent deal to acquire Vodafone’s Japanese mobile phone business could present new opportunities for Yahoo in that market, according to the US-based internet giant’s co-founder, Jerry Yang.

Softbank is already a major shareholder – the largest in fact – of Yahoo’s Japanese division, meaning that Vodafone K.K. and Yahoo Japan Corp. will soon be loosely joined under the same corporate umbrella.

Yang says that he believes this will give Yahoo better chances at penetrating the Japanese market with its mobile search service and other cell phone-based offerings.
