UK retail and supermarket giant, Tesco, is making plans to expand its mobile phone offerings, and offer postpaid wireless contracts, according to The Times.

Tesco already has over 1 million prepaid mobile phone customers, through its partnership with O2. The expansion into postpaid services will likely mean more partnerships with other British wireless carriers, including Vodafone.

This marks an increasing focus on mobile services for Tesco’s telecom division, but the company is also refusing to give up on its struggling fixed-line business.

Andy Dewhurst, who leads the telecom division, says that Tesco is more concerned with service quality than short term acquisition of customers. The company has so far refused to divulge its actual subscriber base of fixed-line customers, but many analysts believe that it could be lower than 250,000.
