As more and more mobile devices incorporate digital cameras, music players, and multimedia functionality, a large amount of memory capacity is becoming a crucial feature for cell phones and gadgets in general.

Device makers are now rivaling each other to offer the most integrated storage, with products like Samsung’s forthcoming 8GB mobile phone.

Although once relatively unimportant, “storage is no longer in the background,” says independent analyst, Tom Coughlin. “It’s not just nice to have; it’s a must-have.”

As digital storage technology becomes cheaper, demand only increases, according to NPD researcher, Ross Rubin. It appears that as cheap and efficient as this technology becomes, it still has trouble keeping up with the huge demand for digital music, multimedia, and video data.
