Wireless communication hardware maker, Uniden American Corporation has teamed up with VoIP provider, Packet8 to release a new cordless IP-based telephone.
The 5.8GHz digital cordless UIP160P, which was launched last week at the 2006 Spring VON Show, comes equipped with 8×8’s patented broadband phone technology, as well as full functionality as a digital router. This means that it gives customers easy access to the many feature-rich internet calling plans offered by Packet8.
The new device is currently being sold exclusively at Home Depot, where it carries a suggested retail price of $99, but offers a $100 mail-in rebate for anyone who signs-up for Packet8 service. This essentially allows consumers to get a free cordless phone, and experience VoIP first hand.
As an added benefit for big families or small businesses, the UIP160P system is expandable to include up to 10 handsets. Distinct ringtones, caller ID, call waiting, and handset paging features are all built in to the device.
“8×8 is very pleased to partner with Uniden to offer this amazing value through Home Depot stores,†said Huw Rees, who is vice president of sales & marketing at Packet8’s parent company, 8×8. “The availability of Packet8 Internet phone service through Home Depot shows the movement of VoIP from the early adopter phase towards mainstream consumer acceptance.â€
