A deal between Verizon Wireless and TiVo Inc. will soon enable Verizon customers to program TiVo digital television recordings directly from their mobile phones.

This first-of-its-kind service is TiVo’s latest attempt to stand out from the growing number of cable and satellite TV companies now providing DVR digital recording offerings.

DVR services involve the recording to TV programming onto a hard disk, for later viewing, with the ability to pause live TV and fast-forward through commercial breaks. TiVo Mobile, however, will bring a new level of convenience and external control to the whole process.

“TiVo isn’t just about a great way to watch television but it’s also about a great way to manage your TV life, and to do that, we realize TiVo can’t be isolated. It has to be integrated with all these other digital devices in people’s lives,” said TiVo CEO Tom Rogers in a recent interview.

Verizon customers will be able to sign-up for TiVo Mobile, starting in the early summer, at which time official pricing details for the service will be announced.
