UK-based Vodafone Group has launched a new HSDPA cellular data network in four German cities.

The new network’s main supplier, Siemens, said in a statement that Vodafone clients in Frankfurt, Munich, Hanover, and Duesseldorf can now access wireless email and internet services at speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps. This is comparable to the data transfer speeds of DSL broadband connections.

This moves makes Vodafone the second carrier to enter Germany’s 3G market, after Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile, which recently announced plans to upgrade its existing UMTS mobile data network to the faster HSDPA wireless standard.
