The use of mobile phones inside European aircraft seems to be drawing closer, with OnAir announcing that Air France will receive a GSM-equipped Airbus plan by early 2007.

The Airbus A318 single-aisle plane fitted with cellular gear will be used in a six-month commercial trial of Europe’s GSM wireless standard. OnAir, which is an Airbus/SITA partnership, revealed that the testing will be conducted on both short-haul domestic flights within Europe, and on flights to and from North African destinations.

“We expect this to be the first of many line-and retrofit aircraft, enabling airlines to respond to growing passenger demand to communicate onboard,” said Airbus executive, Ruediger Fuchs, who also sits on the OnAir board.

OnAir is currently making plans to provide passenger voice and data communication services to passengers travelling on Airbus and Boeing aircraft.
