Alabama to Lift Ban on Cell Phones in Public Schools
6:40 am on April 19, 2006 | Category: Cell Phones, Law, Mobile Devices, Regulation
Lawmakers in the U.S. state of Alabama have voted to scrap a statewide ban on the possession of cellular phones by students in public schools.
The Senate voted 33-to-0 in favor of ending the ban, which previously prohibited all students from carrying mobile phones or other electronic communication devices when on school property.
Birmingham, AL representative, Oliver Robinson, who initially proposed lifting the ban says that the restrictions on cell phones went way to far, making it difficult for students to contact their parents to be picked up after school or extracurricular activities.
Once this bill is signed by the state’s governor, it is expected to become law at the beginning of July. This will give city and county school boards time to work out their own individual rules for cell phone use in schools, before the academic year begins.
