AT&T to Offer IPTV-on-Demand Service

In an obvious effort to secure its position in the internet television market, AT&T has signed a contract with Akimbo Systems to deliver IP-based video-on-demand service to Homezone TV subscribers, beginning this summer.
The new service will integrate AT&T/Yahoo broadband internet access with AT&T/DISH Network TV programming, and deliver digital video, web content, photos, and music through a set-top box. Subscribers will also be able to access Akimbo’s digital video-on-demand library, which includes over 10,000 movies and television shows, and reportedly grows by around 150 titles each day.
An online guide will let users search through show titles and descriptions, and view previews. Programs can also be browsed and downloaded onto any broadband internet-connected computer.
AT&T is hoping that this deal with Akimbo will complement “Lightspeed,” its multi-billion dollar fiber optic network, enabling residential IPTV service.
