Australia’s top wireless providers are pumping big money into 3G customer acquisition efforts, so as to accelerate adoption of advanced mobile data services.

Telstra has started offering record discounts of up to A$500 on advanced mobile handsets, in order to catch up with Hutchison, which has already recruited over 600,000 3G customers.

“The 3G offers are the strongest we have seen for many years and we are sure they will do well in the market for Telstra,” said Brendan Fleiter, the managing director of Telstra reseller, Crazy John’s.

Two other carriers, Optus and Vodafone, meanwhile, have extended the reach of their 3G networks to include Brisbane and the Gold Coast, after initially launching in Sydney and Melbourne. Vodafone claims that 15,000 Queensland customers have already bought 3G phones, despite a lack of advertising.

All the Australian providers are making clear attempts to outdo each other in the 3G market, in order to take advantage of increased revenue from enhanced mobile data services.
