The Chinese government has reportedly promised to let carriers in the country choose their own 3G wireless standards, despite fears within the industry that China would try and force its own homegrown standard upon providers.

China’s pledge came as a result of trade talks with the US government earlier this week. Officials said that they would “ensure that telecommunications service providers will be allowed to make their own choices as to which standard to adopt, and to issue licenses for all 3G standards in a technologically neutral manner.”

Many carriers in the country are reluctant to depend on the Chinese system, known as TD-SCDMA, claiming that it doesn’t work as well as foreign-developed 3G standards. It now appears that carriers will be given the freedom to choose from a number of standards, including W-CDMA and CDMA-2000, which are much more universal than China’s homegrown system, and used in many countries around the world.
