Customers Launch Violent Backlash against RFID

5:30 am on April 18, 2006 | Category: Wireless Technology

As contactless RFID payment solutions become more popular among retailers, many consumers are angrily protesting the technology, due to concerns about computer viruses and credit card security.

Some have gone as far as destroying the radio chips in their credit cards, by putting hitting the cards with a hammer, or putting them in a microwave.

An industry has also been built around the destruction of RFID chips, with some companies offering “zapper” bracelets that automatically destroy the tags when approaching an RFID scanner.

This kind of resistance has been present upon the invention of many new technologies, but has been especially prevalent in this case. For it to stop, companies will need to convince consumers that RFID is indeed a safe technology, and that all security risks have been dealt with.
