Interactive TV Guide Coming to Mobile Phones
7:50 am on April 12, 2006 | Category: Business, Mobile Devices
Gemstar-TV Guide’s Mobile Entertainment division has recently announced the impending launch of two new services for mobile phone users in the United States.
The first is an interactive version of the TV Guide listings made specially for cell phones. It allows users to look up local programming, read reviews and viewing recommendations, schedule show reminders, and send reminders to friends. By the time of its release later this year, the service will also incorporate the ability to remotely access a digital video recorder, and to control which shows are recorded on a home television.
The second forthcoming service is a mobile on-demand version of the TV Guide Channel, offering short form listings, and highlighting the best shows on TV.
By bringing these two services to the US market, Gemstar-TV Guide hopes to duplicate the success it has already experienced in Japan. The company launched a similar offering called G-Guide Mobile in that country, which is currently available through KDDI and NTT DoCoMo, and has a total of over 5 million subscribers.
