Telecom equipment makers, Alcatel and Lucent Technologies, are making a visible effort to protect their recent merger agreement from interference over national security concerns.

There has been some speculation that the US government could attempt to nix the merger due to “sensitive” projects being managed by Lucent at the Bell Labs. These projects falling under the control of a foreign company (Alcatel) could potentially be seen as a threat to security.

In order to prevent government opposition, Lucent and Alcatel have agreed to form a separately managed US-based subsidiary to oversee the Bell Labs projects. Former Defense Secretary, William Petty has agreed to take a role in operating the spin-off company, along with CIA Director, James Woolsey and National Security Agency Director, Kenneth Minihan.
