The worldwide sale of mobile phones generated a total of over US$117 billion in revenue last year, according to a recent report from Telecom Trends International. This is a new industry record representing an increase of 14.9% over 2004’s numbers.
The top three handset makers in terms of both shipments and revenue were Nokia, Motorola, and Samsung, respectively. Combined, these giants now control over 60% of the global market. Fourth place was occupied by Sony Ericsson in terms of revenue, and LG for overall shipments.
As for future predictions, the TTI report predicts that handset revenue will peak at US$129.9 billion in 2008, but that overall shipments would continue growing until at least 2012. The research firm predicts that a mind boggling 1.7 billion units would be sold in that year, compared to about 817 million in 2005. By then, 67% of the phones sold will be replacements for obsolete or broken devices.
