Nokia’s outgoing Chief Executive Officer, Jorma Ollila, delivered a keynote speech yesterday at the CTIA Wireless convention in Las Vegas.

Ollila took the opportunity to stress the fact that plain old voice communication is still the most important feature in the wireless service mix, and that there is still work to be done in improving voice quality on handsets everywhere.

Ollila also praised the efforts that Nokia and other companies have put into developing advanced features like mobile TV, cellular broadband, and over-the-air music downloads, but insisted that these applications will always take a back seat to reliable voice service. Users in the developing world especially are most interested in simply getting a basic phone that works.

“Mobile voice is still the killer application,” he said in the keynote. “Subscriber growth is still fueled by voice, and voice will be the most valuable form of communication for a long time still. There is still much work to do to improve voice connections and handsets.”
