3G mobile data service are expected to get a lot faster in the years to come, with HSDPA technology promising to outdo the speeds of many wired broadband offerings.

Nortel and Qualcomm announced last week that they have successfully transferred data at speeds of 7.2 Mbps, using Qualcomm’s terminals, and Nortel’s advanced HSDPA networking equipment.

So far, HSDPA is only being offered in 16 US cities (by Cingular Wireless), and it will likely before a few more years before commercial networks will be upgraded to include this newly tested technology. It is encouraging, however, that telecom equipment companies are working to improve cellular broadband, so as to expand its potential range of applications in the years to come.
