Wireless chipmaker, Qualcomm, has announced plans to release a new cell phone chip that is compatible with both of the world’s top cellular broadband standards.

The company revealed at the CTIA Wireless trade show on Wednesday that the chip will work with both the EV-DO standard used in the US by Verizon and Sprint Nextel, as well as the W-CDMA standard that is popular in Europe.

Qualcomm CEO, Paul Jacobs said that the launch of this chip will greatly reduce the cost of making dual-standard phones, and present an affordable option for the majority of traveling businesspeople.

The first text products are expected to be ready by the end of this year, and Qualcomm is trying to convince Motorola to adopt the technology in some of its future handsets.
