Internet VoIP provider, Skype, announced yesterday that it has achieved the milestone of 100 million registered users worldwide.

The Luxembourg-based company’s popularity has increased tremendously since last September when it was acquired by online auction giant, eBay. At that time, Skype had a total of about 54 million members.

In reality, the number of people who regularly use the program is still much lower than 100 million, as there are many occasional and novelty users. The number of people that actually pay for the SkypeOut PC-to-Phone communication service is smaller still, but with such a huge base of users, it still generates an impressive amount of revenue.

The bottom line is that subscriber growth is good, and Skype has become one of the company’s major growth engines. Contrary to the predictions of some analysts, this wildly popular online VoIP service might be an excellent investment for eBay after all.
