Skype’s free online VoIP service is becoming more and more popular among users in China, and some tech-savvy users have even managed to get around the country’s block of Skype’s paid PC-to-Phone VoIP offering.

That service, known as SkypeOut, has been banned in China since last year, and the government is doing everything in its power to ensure that all paid Skype offerings remain inaccessible to citizens.

These efforts reflect the communist government’s desire to crush fair competition by whatever means possible, in order to keep the telephone industry under the control of state-owned carriers.
