The convenience of wireless mobility and efficiency of VoIP have just become more converged than ever for customers in the UK.

US-based broadband phone carrier, Vonage, has teamed up with British Wi-Fi operator, The Cloud, to offer wireless VoIP calls to Vonage customers in the UK.

The service will come at no extra charge for existing Vonage users, who pay £7.99 ($14.25), plus line rental, for unlimited long distance calling in the UK and Ireland. All a user needs to do to access the service in any of The Cloud’s nine hotspot zones is purchase a special Wi-Fi handset for around £80.

This isn’t a real replacement to a normal mobile phone, as it only works in the specially designated areas, and isn’t compatible with regular cellular networks. As the technology becomes more advanced, however, and wireless hotspots become more prevalent, services like this one could pose a real threat to traditional wireless carriers.

“It’s really a wake-up call for the telecoms market. It’s saying there’s really a much better, cheaper way of making calls,” claims Vonage Managing Director, Kerry Ritz. “This is the inevitable next stage in the voice-over-Internet protocol revolution.”
