Communication infrastructure provider, Southern Telecom and regional wireless operator, First Mile Communications are teaming up to offer a new long-range wireless broadband service to businesses in Atlanta, Georgia.
The first hub for the Wireless Lateral offering was set up yesterday at Atlanta’s INFORUM, and uses the 18 GHz, 24 GHz and 38 GHz wireless bands to blanket a five-mile radius with service. This one hub covers most of downtown Atlanta, an area which includes 5600 businesses in 1500 office buildings.
The new wireless service will make use of Southern Telecom’s fiber facilities, which have already been deployed throughout the city, and are leased to numerous service providers, including Level 3, Cogent, Verizon Business, and AT&T.
“This is extending our fiber optic network wirelessly,†said Southern Telecom’s manager of business development, Ben Easterling. “Our model is offer those tenants a low cost high bandwidth solution using wireless, and then, as the bandwidth at that building grows, we can migrate to a fiber connection.â€
The companies are planning to expand the service by installing another hub in Atlanta in the near future, and is considering bringing the same offering to other cities after that.
“We do plan to take it into other metro areas,†Easterling commented. “As the market grows and the understanding of what we are doing in Atlanta grows, we will expand the Wireless Lateral offering.â€
