Wireless Standard Debate Threatens 3G Deployment in China
4:30 pm on April 2, 2006 | Category: Cellular, Mobile Devices, Regulation, Wireless Technology
Pressure is mounting for China to have 3G wireless networks in place in time for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, but many questions must still be answered before such services can be rolled out.
There is no shortage of confusion about exactly which wireless standard will be used by the new networks, as the government has paid to develop its own homegrown high-speed wireless standard. Many of the country’s carriers, however, believe that it would be easier and more cost effective to use the already established W-CDMA standard, which is used by most 3G providers in North America.
This disagreement could ultimately be responsible for delaying the roll-out of 3G services in China, and has sparked a much broader debate about how much right a government has to exercise control over the development and implementation of wireless technology.
