The percentage of U.S. adults with some form of internet access at home, work, school, or a library, has increased 3 points in the last 12 months, and now stands at 77%, according to a study by Harris Interactive.

This translates to a 5% increase in the total number of American internet users, with an all time high of 172 million now online.

The bulk of this increase is due to the growing number of people with ISP subscriptions at home. This figure has increased to 70% from 66% in April 2005.

As the online population increases, the digital divide is closing, and the average internet user is starting to look more and more like the average American, according to Harris Interactive. Although the internet is still disproportionately used by younger people and those with high incomes, older and lower-income users are catching up more quickly than ever.
