Nearly 20% of broadband subscribers in the United States and Europe now use Wi-Fi technology to access the internet wirelessly, according to a recent report from Strategy Analytics.

In the countries surveyed, about 7% of all households (or 19 million in total) have set up some sort of 802.11-based wireless network. The U.S. has the highest overall penetration at 8.4%, while northern Europe follows with 7.9%. The UK and Germany are both below average with 6.1% and 5.1% penetration, respectively.

“Wi-Fi has become the preferred networking technology for affluent early adopters,” notes the research firm’s principal analyst, David Mercer. “Rising ownership of laptop PCs and other portable Internet devices will make Wi-Fi the dominant home networking choice for most broadband subscribers.”
