In the past couple of years, U.S. wireless carriers have made clear their intentions to target Hispanic customers with their mobile phone offerings.

Sprint Nextel, for example, has recently started offering Spanish-language TV and video clips to its customers, while Verizon Wireless has agreed to sponsor the summer tour of Shakira, a Colombian-born singer. As a whole, executives in the American cell phone industry are realizing the true size and potential of the Hispanic market.

“They are more into their cell phones and they are more dependent on them,” said Lee Rainie, who leads the Pew Internet and American Life Project. “They are the biggest minority group, and Latino culture is spreading into every nook and cranny of American life.”
