Seen by many as further evidence that Apple Computer is planning its own in-house iTunes cell phone, the company has filed for a patent involving the purchase of songs, ringtones, or music videos over a wireless network.

The patent, which was originally filed in December 2004, and approved by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Thursday, describes an invention that lets wireless device users interact with an online music store, and bookmark song downloads for purchase at a later time.

This could fit into Apple’s wireless music plans, by allowing them to market to music fans with short memory spans. It will prevent users from wanting to purchase a song, only to forget its name before reaching their computer.

The new bookmarking feature will let users bookmark songs for download as soon as they get home to their computers, or possibly even download music over the air, if network bandwidth permits.

If such a service from Apple goes ahead, it will be a competitor to Verizon’s V CAST wireless multimedia offering, which already allows customers to download songs directly onto their phones, while within range of an EV-DO network.
