Since the middle of last year, we’ve been hearing the hype about the Motorola Q, a slim new Windows-based smartphone from America’s top handset maker.

Originally expected in December, however, the Q’s launch date has been bumped back again and again, with the device now expected to be available “in the first half of 2006.”

The chance of this device being a big hit seems to be diminishing by the day at this point, with other advanced smartphones hitting the market, and taking customers from the Q before it even launches. If Motorola wants the Q to be much of a success they’ll have to give it some pretty innovative features, and make a big splash with the launch.

Unconfirmed rumors are currently making the rounds that Motorola and Microsoft are planning a joint press release to launch the device on May 22, but there has been no official indication from either company that this will actually happen.
