Handset maker, Nokia, has agreed to work with ATI Technologies in a strategic partnership to boost the multimedia performance of Nokia phones for applications like mobile gaming, music, video, and television.

A well-known manufacturer of graphics processor units, ATI describes itself as “a world leader in the design and manufacture of innovative 3D graphics and digital media silicon solutions.” It has a proven record of providing graphical hardware for both PC and Mac-based desktop and notebook computers, as well as televisions, game consoles, and handheld devices.

“We are announcing our collaboration with ATI now, so that developers have the next 12 to 18 months to be innovative and create world class mobile multimedia experiences,” said Nokia’s senior vice president of multimedia experiences, Ilkka Raiskinen.

The companies are aiming to “drive the complexity out of multimedia development by promoting open standards and providing integrated hardware, software and tools [so that] developers need only create content once for consumers to enjoy on a range of devices.”
