Qualcomm and Microsoft announced an agreement yesterday, which will allow the Windows Mobile operating system to run directly on Qualcomm’s cell phone chipsets, potentially reducing the development times of new smartphones.

This integration will also lead to smaller and lighter wireless devices, and allow for much better battery life.

“We know that mobile operators are eager to attract and retain subscribers with an affordable portfolio of Windows Mobile-powered devices,” commented Microsoft’s senior vice president Pieter Knook. “Qualcomm’s innovative hardware platform coupled with our versatile software experience does just that.”

The two companies have already begun the process of testing and integrating Windows Mobile on Qualcomm’s 7xxx-series mobile chips. Conducting in-house testing will eliminate development steps for manufacturers, and potentially let the technology reach the consumer market more quickly.

The new platform will be compatible with UMTS and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO wireless data standards. It is also being designed to take full advantage of the multimedia capabilities available on other Windows-powered mobile devices.

Chips with Windows Mobile will be available to manufacturers by the end of this year, meaning that smartphones based on the newly integrated technology should hit the market sometime in 2007.
