A regulatory panel has given approval to Qwest’s plan of offering IP-based cable television service in Denver Colorado.

Qwest has agreed to offer service in all parts of the city, which will bring it into direct competition with cable giant, Comcast. This will create a more competitive cable market in the area, potentially leading to lower prices and greater programming selection for consumers.

As of now, Comcast is Colorado’s dominant cable provider, with a total of 700,000 subscribing households in the state. It has already started moving in on Qwest’s core voice market by offering VoIP digital phone service in several cities serviced by the carrier.
