Recently Discovered Trojan Virus Uses Microsoft Word Vulnerability
5:30 am on May 22, 2006 | Category: Email, Software, Web Services
Security researchers have recently detected a new computer virus that exploits an unpatched weakness in Microsoft’s popular Word application.
The BackDoor-CKB!cfaae1e6 Trojan comes in the form of a disguised email attachment, and has been used in at least one targeted attack on a corporation. It is of low risk to the general public, but is notable because it uses a previously undetected flaw in Word XP and Word 2003.
“Due to the aggravating circumstances…, we wanted to make sure the community is aware that this problem exists as soon as possible,” said a note on the ISC Internet Storm Center website. Researchers say that the most recent attack probably originated in either Taiwan or mainland China, but haven’t been able to pinpoint the exact source.
Microsoft has confirmed that the vulnerability does exist, but is not critical, and will release a patch to correct the problem by June 13.
