The Republican Party has gained majority control of America’s five-member Federal Communications Commission for the first time in over a year, with the confirmation of Robert McDowell as its newest member.

McDowell, a telecommunications lawyer, has proven his qualifications as senior vice president and assistant general council for Comptel, an organization of competitive telecom carriers.

This appointment will allow FCC Chairman, Kevin Martin, also a Republican, to make his move on several contentious issues, including media ownership rules, which have recently been hung up by deadlock of the Commission’s two Democrat and two Republican members.

“I congratulate Rob McDowell on his confirmation as Commissioner at the FCC,” Martin said in a statement, after the Senate confirmation was completed. “He has a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the communications arena, and we will rely on his insight. I am anxious to have him onboard and look forward to working with a full complement of Commissioners to address the important issues before us.”
