South Korea’s biggest wireless provider, SK Telecom, has just launched a high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) cellular broadband network in 25 Korean cities.
The new network represents a significant improvement over SK Telecom’s previously available CDMA-based 3G technology.
Mobile phone users in South Korea will now be able to wirelessly download data, including music and videos, at speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps, with upstream rates of 2.0 Mbps.
SK Telecom has reportedly invested about 1 trillion won ($1.06 billion) to launch this advanced new service, and hopes to expand it to cover 84 cities, or 91% of the country’s population, by the end of this year.
