Four of America’s big cable companies — Time Warner, Cox Communications, Advance/Newhouse Communications, and Comcast — have expressed interest in purchasing wireless spectrum licenses at the upcoming FCC auction.

CEO, Glenn Britt, of Time Warner Cable said during a shareholder conference yesterday that the four companies have made plans to file a Short Form Application with the Federal Communications Commission, which will allow them to participate in the auction starting next month.

“The filing of this application does not obligate Time Warner Cable or other companies to bid in the auction, but it provides us the flexibility to take part should we decide it makes business sense to do so,” said a statement from the company.

The group of cable companies currently have an agreement going to resell Sprint Nextel’s wireless service, but some cable executives have expressed interest in setting up an in-house service. This would allow them to offer “quadruple play” service bundles, by adding wireless to the television, internet, and telephone packages currently being sold.
