Over 100 million mobile phone users around the world now use some kind of third-generation wireless technology, according to Strategy Analytics, which says that 3G has reached an important point of “critical mass.”

About 70 million subscribers use WCDMA-based handsets, while a further 30 million have phones using the CDMA2000 EV-DO wireless standard.

“Much of this success is due to the strong pushes by influential carriers like NTTDoCoMo, Hutchison 3G, and SK Telecom, and more recently Vodafone and Verizon Wireless, who have worked hard to drive 3G uptake among their subscribers,” said Sara Harris, a senior analyst who authored the SA report.

The research firm predicts that 3G technology will see further rapid growth in the U.S. market, as Cingular Wireless extends the deployment of its HSDPA cellular broadband technology.
