The CEO of Carphone Warehouse has admitted that the tens of thousands of customers signed up for its “free” broadband internet service won’t be connected until August at least.

The free high-speed internet bonus was originally announced in April, and is available to customers signing up for the TalkTalk landline phone service. Carphone had promised to add its service to 1,000 BT phone exchanges, serving “nearly 70% of the UK population,” but setting up such a network is taking longer than expected.

This has resulted in a flurry of complaints from customers who have signed up, but not started paying for, the TalkTalk offering.

Carphone Warehouse says that “there is huge demand for this amazing offer and there are lots of local difficulties to deal with.” They claim that patience will be rewarded in this case, and customers willing to wait a couple of months will get a great deal of unlimited phone and high-speed internet service for just £20 per month.

If the service really is up and running at the end of August, Carphone has a good chance at redeeming itself, but it definitely has a big job to do over the coming months. If prospective customers are hit with any more delays they will probably begin to distrust the service, causing its overall potential to drop off rapidly.
