Cisco CEO, John Chambers, to Take Over as Chairman
6:20 am on June 12, 2006 | Category: Business, Corporate
Network equipment maker, Cisco Systems Inc., announced yesterday that CEO, John Chambers, would become chairman of the company’s board, when John Morgridge retires in November.
The 56-year-old Chambers says that he will keep his role as CEO for the time being, but step down as president before becoming chairman, triggering speculation about who would take over that role.
Two frontrunners for the position are Chief Development Officer, Charles Giancarlo, and Mike Volpi, who manages the company’s service provider technology group.
“Both Giancarlo and Volpi are capable as next senior management. The company obviously has a deep bench for talent,” said research analyst, Ken Muth, of Robert W. Baird & Co. “Maybe Giancarlo could be a stronger candidate for CEO, although Volpi could become the next president.”
Giancarlo’s current job description includes overseeing Linksys, Cisco’s wireless network equipment division. Volpi, meanwhile has played a big role in the company’s investment and acquisition strategies for the past several years.
