The chief operating officer of Comcast, Steve Burke, said last week that the cable giant is on track to have more internet and voice users than television subscribers within the next five years.

At current growth rates, America’s largest cable operator will have a total of 25 million high-speed internet and digital phone subscriptions in five years time, significantly outpacing its 21.5 million cable television subscriptions.

Cable broadband services are currently growing in popularity by 15% annually, compared to just 1% annual growth for multi-channel video offerings, Burke said at the recent “D: All Things Digital” conference in Carlsbad, California.

Burke also talked about the growth of web-based TV, saying that “it is a good thing” to make more content available over the internet. He suggested that content providers should think about “slicing and dicing shows,” then making them available online, saying that such an approach wouldn’t threaten existing revenue if executed properly.
