As the world’s most popular search engine, Google has managed to carve out a great name for itself on the internet, proper, but is now hoping to extend itself into the fast growing mobile web.

Dipchand “Deep” Nishar, who leads the search giant’s mobile division, recognizes the importance of getting people to use Google on their cell phones. Mobile devices are considerably more common than PCs in many markets, especially developing nations like China and India.

Nishar’s mission is to customize Google’s mobile search experience to suit the needs of users on the go, which can be very different than those of PC users.

Someone using a computer, for example, who searched for the word “film” would find the Internet Movie Database, a great site for movie and actor details, but someone Googling from their mobile phone would probably be more interested in a way to book movie tickets on the go. Google’s mobile search division exists to anticipate and fulfil such customer interests.

“On a mobile it’s important that you find it right away,” Nishar commented, explaining that most users prefer to browse in-depth web content on a home computer rather than a mobile device.

So far, Google has made its web search, image search, and news search features, as well as the GMail web-based email solution, available to the majority of cell phone users. The company is now looking at ways to optimize these services, and expand its internet search dominance into the wireless web space.
