One of the internet technology industry’s biggest questions has finally been answered by Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, who says that the company won’t be releasing its own in-house web browser to compete with Microsoft Internet Explorer.

“The industry is obsessed with this browser question,” Schmidt said in a conference call with Wall Street analysts. “Our observation is that you have a number of fine browsers now, and people have some good choices.”

“We would not build a browser for the fun of building a browser and creating another choice,” Schmidt added, explaining that Google would make a browser only “if we thought there was a real end-user benefit.”

Google already has a partnership with the Mozilla Project, and helps to distribute the popular Firefox browser through its online advertising network.
