Motorola Inc. has just revealed plans to beef up its foreign holdings by creating a manufacturing presence in India in the near future.

“We are on track for a manufacturing presence in India. An announcement is imminent,” said the company’s executive VP for integrated supply chain operations, Stu Reed, at a news conference Monday morning.

The world’s second biggest handset maker also announced its intentions to invest $60 million over the next two years to expand its supply chain operations in Singapore, and recruit about 200 more professionals in that country.

These moves are part of Motorola’s long term quest to increase its market share in developing countries, and rival the global sales of market leader, Nokia.

Although lagging in North America, Finland-based Nokia currently dominates the worldwide GSM handset industry, and has already put significant effort into developing markets such as India and China.
