Qwest Communications will integrate parts of Microsoft’s Windows Live web application with its broadband internet service, as part of a recently renewed deal with the software giant.
Windows Live OneCare PC, a system security and maintenance program that normally costs $50 per year, will be given as a free bonus to Qwest’s 1.7 million broadband customers, throughout the western United States. The telecom carrier will also provide subscribers with special versions of the Windows Live email and instant messaging applications, starting later this year.
Qwest has given its users access to Microsoft’s MSN Premium suite of online services, including McAffe virus scanning, since the two companies signed their original agreement in 2001. This latest extension of the deal makes Qwest the first ISP to integrate Windows Live with a broadband offering.
When asked if there were any plans to create more ISP partnerships outside of the U.S. market, Microsoft’s director of partner product management for Windows Live, Quin Nikel declined to comment directly, but hinted that the company is “always in discussions.â€
