Worldwide broadband internet penetration, which has made great gains in the past year, will double in the next five years, according to a recent study by research firm, IDC.

At the end of 2005, about 205 million households had some kind of broadband internet connection, that number will reach 400 million by the end of 2010, the research firm predicts. This growth will likely be fueled by continued decline in the price of internet access, along with the increasing availability of personal computers in the developing world.

IDC’s report goes on to predict that high-speed internet subscriptions, which surpassed dialup in 2005, will account for about 75% of the world’s internet connections by 2010, and that two thirds of these users will use DSL, a broadband technology commonly deployed by telephone carriers.

By 2010, IDC expects that the global broadband industry will generate a total of $122.4 billion in annual revenues.
