Time Warner has revealed plans to add an interactive component to its cable television service, using OpenTV Inc.’s software platform.

OpenTV is led by Time Warner’s former CTO, Jim Chiddix, and already powers the interactive television offerings of EchoStar Communications, a popular satellite operator. The deal with Time Warner is OpenTV’s first license agreement with a major U.S. cable company.

The OpenTV software is compatible with Motorola set-top boxes, and will allow Time Warner subscribers to access interactive games and TV shows, as well as mosaic program guides.

Similar features will likely be extended to Comcast cable TV customers in the future, if OpenTV’s ongoing negotiations with that company are successful.
