With advanced digital applications like streaming video outgrowing currently standardized wireless broadband technologies, many companies are rushing to launch new hardware for user with a faster and more advanced Wi-Fi specification.

The 802.11n specification, currently under review by the Wi-Fi Alliance, would boost the Wi-Fi standard’s maximum possible data transfer speed from 54 to 270 megabits per second.

A number of companies have already started releasing 802.11n-compatible products, but because the technology has not yet been standardized, interoperability between this medley of new products isn’t guaranteed.

There is also nothing to say that all this new hardware will be compatible with the final standard. Many analysts have now warned customers to use discretion when buying these new products, which could easily be useless in a matter of months.
